An apple a day..

An apple a day..

As one of the most popular fruits in the country, apples are well known for being a healthy and convenient snack that will help to keep that doctor away.

Rich in antioxidants, apples help to protect our cells from damage caused by factors such as cigarette smoke, UV rays and pollution. Packed with a range of vitamins and minerals, apples also contain fibre which is important to support a healthy digestive system.

To break it down, one medium apple (roughly 182 grams) contains the following nutrients:

Fibre: 4 grams

Vitamin C: 14% of the RDI

Potassium: 6% of the RDI

Vitamin K: 5% of the RDI

What’s more, an apple also provides 2-4% of the RDI for copper, magnesium and the vitamins A, E, B1, B2, and B6.

Apples provide an array of antioxidants which can help with neutralising free radicals – reactive molecules in the body that build up because of natural processes or environmental stress. Too many of these free radicals can cause cell damage, potentially contributing to a range of conditions such as cancer and diabetes.
