Dry January + Mocktail Recipes

Today is the first day of Dry January – a chance to ditch the hangover, reduce the waistline and save some serious money by giving up alcohol for 31 days. Some of the team at Bensons are signing up to the challenge and we have picked their favourite alcohol-free cocktails and tips to help you avoid a tipple until February.

A little bit about the cause – Dry January is the annual movement through which millions of people give up alcohol for the month of January. Alcohol is the UK’s biggest risk factor for death, ill-health and disability for people aged 15-49. Alcohol Concern brings together an amazing network of individuals and organisations, including partner charities who work on issues associated with alcohol.

Why Dry January?

  • Enables you to take control of your relationship with alcohol.
  • Drives a conversation about alcohol: why do we drink it, what does it do, and how can we reduce the harm it can cause.

Our favourite alcohol-free cocktails

Non-Alcoholic Sangria

Not only does this beautifully golden sangria skip the wine, it also makes use of delicious star fruit and kiwi fruit. Yum!

 Blueberry Moscow Mule Mocktails

Blueberry Mosco Mule – simple and refreshing (plus you get to break out those gorgeous copper mugs you only use at Christmas)

 Pineapple Ginger Sparkler

Ok perhaps this one is a little more summer than cold and dark January but it is slightly spiced so that lets us off!

Basil Lemonade Punch

Refreshing twist on a classic.

Tips to keep off the tipple

Treat Yourself

Put the money you are saving to good use and treat yourself to something you’ve had your eye on for ages. You’ll be amazed what 3 Espresso Martinis can buy you!

Hide the bottles

Make things easier for yourself and remove bottles from the fridge and from a visible wine rack- hide them in the cupboard!

Do it together

Its much easier to achieve something if you have support. Persuade a friend or partner to join you.

Download the App

Alcohol Concern has a fantastic (and free) app that can help you track your drinks and units and how many days you have gone alcohol free. It can also tally up and tell you how much money you have saved over a set period.

Dry January in your workplace

Organise a dry event for your colleagues and appoint a Dry January Champion to be responsible for driving the campaign on behalf of your workplace.
